The TEA was initially established as The National
Economy and Savings Society in December 12, 1929 on the suggestion of
Atatürk. The purpose of the Society was to minimize the devastating
impacts of the 1929 Depression, on the one hand by encouraging savings,
on the other hand by promoting the domestic markets to use products
made in Turkey.
The Society merged with the Turkish Economic Society
under the auspices of the Turkish Economic Association on January 18,
1955. In order to instill awareness and knowledge of economics in
Turkey, the TEA has been producing economic publications; organising
seminars, symposiums and conferences; providing scholarships to
outstanding economics students and giving awards to young economists
with successful theses on the Turkish economy.

International Economic Association (IEA)
The IEA was founded in 1950 as a Non Governmental Organization, at the instigation of the Social Sciences Department of UNESCO.
It has since its creation maintained information and consultative
relations with UNESCO and is since 1973 a federated member of the International Social Science Council.
Its aim from the beginning has been to promote personal contacts and
mutual understanding among economists in different parts of the world
through the organisation of scientific meetings, through common
research programmes and by means of publications of an international
character on problems of current importance.
The IEA is in effect a federation of national academic associations or
committees representing the economists of each country with 60 Member
Associations including five associate members and one regional member.
